General Liability Insurance Coverage
Liability is the extent to which a person or entity can be
held legally responsible for damages to another person or entity or their property. General
liability insurance protects moving companies against liability for unintentional injury to
a person or damage to their property. Furthermore, it protects those employing the moving
services of the moving company.
Here are some examples of why this coverage is important:
- Any time a moving company moves a heavy piece of furniture such as a piano, there is
always the potential for an accident to occur. If that piano were to fall, it could cause
major damage to the building in which it was being moved or it could potentially fall on
the customer causing serious injury. If the moving company did not have liability
insurance, the customer may not be able to obtain compensation for the damages or lost
income due to injuries.
- Movers damage an elevator or glass entrance door in an apartment building during the
course of moving furniture into their customer's new apartment. If the moving company has
liability coverage, its insurance company should cover the cost of repair or replacement.
If the moving company doesn't have liability insurance, the customer (being the tenant)
can be held responsible for the damages.
Consumers should never hire any company from any industry that operates without
liability insurance. Doing so could result in the customer being liable for damages or
injury caused by such a company.
